CliMates in  Doha!

This Monday, November 26th, the UNFCCC COP 18 opened in Doha, Qatar. CliMates, the international student think and do tank on climate change, will be present at this crucial meeting. Indeed, beyond its technical agenda and its focus on long-term mitigation and financing, this Conference must mark the beginning of a new era of negotiations on climate change.

Friday November 2nd, a hundred students from five different continents signed in Paris the CliMates Call for Action. Next month, the document will be presented to negotiators in Qatar, during the next Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

This text results from the International Summit organized by the CliMates association, held in Sciences Po’s facilities from October 29th to November 2nd 2012.

Following three days of intense negotiations, the delegates adopted a common student position. Out of this groundbreaking approach emerged:

- Commitments to contribute to the fight against climate change. For instance, CliMates will contribute to an online database of successful adaptation projects, striving to connect similar needs and creative solutions  between regions.

- But also recommendations to leaders at local, national and international levels. For instance, CliMates exhorts governments to acknowledge that agriculture is a root cause for ongoing deforestation and to realize this acknowledgement is necessary to the effective implementation of the REDD+ (Reduction of Emission by Deforestation and Degradation) process.

Surrounding these working groups that were the core of the Summit, renowned figures and experts addressed the students, among whom were Jean Jouzel (2007 Nobel Peace Prize Winner), Laurence Tubiana (Founder and Director of the Institute of Sustainable Development and International Relations (IDDRI)), Ghassan  salamé (former Lebanese Minister of Culture, former Special Counselor to United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan and current Director of the Paris School of International Affairs), and Paul Watkinson (Head of the French Climate Negotiation Team).

Furthermore, student organizations and their projects were showcased in the halls of the Summit, enriching the debates and simultaneously allowing for participants to create and strengthen their ties, thus reinforcing the international network of climate-concerned students.

Launched in Paris in 2011, CliMates is an international student think-tank which conducts research on innovative solutions to climate change. During the course of one year, with an international network comprising over 160 students of different academic and professional backgrounds, the organization has accomplished a thorough collaborative research process on various themes of climate change, and has taken part in large scale International events such as the Rio +20 Conference in June 2012.

Du 29 octobre au 2 novembre 2012, dans les enceintes de Sciences Po Paris, 13 rue de l’Université, 75007 Paris, CliMates organise son premier sommet officiel « Climates International Summit : Student Solutions to Climate Change ». Réunis pour cinq jours de dialogue, une trentaine d’étudiants internationaux, issus de 17 pays, accompagnés d'invités et d'experts reconnus, négocieront une position étudiante commune pour faire avancer la lutte contre le changement climatique.

Créé en 2011 à Paris, CliMates est un think tank étudiant de dimension internationale engagé dans la recherche de solutions innovantes pour combattre le changement climatique. Présent dans le monde entier, CliMates organise son premier rendez‐vous majeur, en partenariat avec la direction scientifique de Sciences Po Paris, l'Institut du développement durable et des relations internationales (Iddri), et Sorbonne Paris Cité.
L'objectif de ce Sommet est à la fois d'aborder les problématiques complexes des négociations climatiques internationales, mais aussi de faire émerger une position étudiante commune sur de nombreux sujets tels que l’énergie, l’eau, l’agriculture et l’aquaculture, les actions locales de développement et d’adaptation, et sur la coopération internationale. CliMates souhaite par ailleurs promouvoir à l'occasion de ce sommet des formes de négociation innovantes.
Cette semaine sera un moment intense de dialogue et de partage autour des thématiques environnementales. A cet effet, en parallèle des groupes de travail, CliMates tiendra trois conférences ouvertes au public, lors desquelles interviendront de nombreuses personnalités, dont Paul Watkinson, Chef de l'équipe négociation climat au Ministère de l'écologie, du développement durable et de l'énergie, Laurence Graff de la DG Action pour le Climat de la Commission européenne ou encore Jean Jouzel, Prix Nobel de la Paix 2007.
En parallèle à ces évènements, une « Agora » sera ouverte au public dans le Hall principal – 13 rue de l'Université, Paris, Sciences Po. Cet espace de circulation et d'exposition doit permettre à de nombreuses associations partenaires de venir exposer leurs projets. Des expositions permanentes ainsi que de nombreux Side Events sont prévus au sein de cette Agora.
A l'issue du Sommet, un document intitulé Climates Call for Action rassemblera les propositions innovantes négociées lors de ces cinq jours d'échanges. Celui‐ci, orienté notamment sur le rôle des jeunes dans la lutte contre le changement climatique en cours, vise à interpeller les décideurs publics et privés.
